Aerating Your Lawn is Critical For a Healthy Root System
Aerating and overseeding is like a two punch combo for your lawn

There is more to a having a beautiful lawn than watering, fertilizing, and regular mowing.  There are other very important steps required to achieve that beautiful lawn and aeration of the soil, is one of those important steps.  Over a long period of time your grass can grow really thick, add in your lawn clippings and the natural thatch of your lawn (criss crossing of grass blades) t becomes so thick it’s difficult for oxygen and other nutrients to reach the roots.

By having your lawn aerated at least once or twice per year can help counter natural thatch and works to improve your soil conditions.  Healthy grass requires healthy soil!  A properly aerated lawn will respond much more favorably to fertilization and regular watering.

Lakeside Lawns & Landscaping is a locally owned and operated lawn care company based out of York County, Virginia.  We specialize in lawn aeration as as part of our regular lawn care programs or as a standalone service for both residential and commercial clients with high visibility lawns they always want to look their best.

What Exactly Is Lawn Aeration?

The lawn aeration process involves the use a of a special machine that will perforate your soil with hundreds of small holes that allow oxygen, water and nutrients to penetrate directly into your lawns root system. The “plugs” of grass that are removed usually contain an inch or two of soil and are about 1/2″ to 3/4″ in diameter, the resulting holes allow the air and nutrients to get down where they really need to be.

This process delivers oxygen, water and nutrients directly to the roots which encourages the roots to grow deeper and works to improve their uptake of nutrients and resilience to produce a more vigorous lawn. Aerating has long been a lawn care secret that golf courses and sports fields groundskeepers have employed for a long time because it really makes a difference especially when used as part of a total lawn care program.

What About Overseeding?

The aeration process creates the perfect environment for planting new grass seed which is why we also recommend overseeding at this time.  Lawn overseeding is the process of sprinkling grass seed over the troubled areas of your lawn.  These could be areas where the mowing deck was set too low and the grass has been scalped, bald spots, brown patches, or areas where the grass is really thin.  Overseeding helps your lawn grow thicker in these areas and can work to restore your lawn.  A thick healthy lawn naturally fights weeds.

Does My Lawn Really Need Aeration?

The simplest answer is yes, your lawn would probably benefit.  If you are serious about the health and appearance of your lawn then aeration and overseeding are just a normal part of a regular lawn care regime.  The longer answer is that it really depends on several factors.  If your lawn is already in rough shape, aeration is only one piece of the puzzle and aeration alone might not be all your lawn needs.  In order to know for sure we would really need to view your property to determine what state your particular lawn is in.

Does your lawn get used frequently by your children or pets?
Do you let your grass clippings fall back onto the lawn?
Was your lawn recently installed?
Does your lawn dry out easily and not uptake water as it should?

These are all signs your lawn could benefit from aerating. The best time to aerate your lawn is during the early fall when the temperatures are not so hot.  The roots can recover quickly and the grass can work to fill in all of the plugs of grass/soil that will be removed during the aeration process.
